macbook air isn’t the thinnest apple

macbook_paperOn the eve of the in-store release of Apple’s sleek and sexy MacBook Air portable, it’s been revealed that an even thinner, tinier MacBook is in the works.

The MacBook Paper is about twice the thickness of a sheet of paper, and it too fits inside of an envelope. Be sure to check out the video clip below to see the new micro laptop in action.

Best of all, you can get your own for free. Just head on over to apcommunity to grab yours. And no, this isn’t real.

chrome and shiny metal imacs on the way

The guys over at Computer Choppers (who previously gave us the gold-plated MacBook Pro and the digg casemod) have a new trick up their sleeves. Working their secret alchemy, they’ve managed to coat the matte aluminum surfaces of Apple’s latest 24-inch iMacs with shiny chrome and other metallic platings.

imac_chrome_1

The Choppers plan on offering over a dozen different plating options, including gold, rose gold, white gold, platinum and more. (Can I get mine plated in Illudium Q-36? Please?)

imac_chrome_2

If you’re interested in giving your iMac its own shiny metal ass so it can tell you to bite it, head on over to this contact form. Now if they’d only work some of their wizardry to get rid of those annoying URL watermarks all over their photos so we could see what they really look like. Thanks to Alex over at Computer Choppers for the updated photos!

mishare: copy music between two ipods

Looking for an easy way to copy songs and movies from one iPod to another? Then look no further. This compact device connects two iPods and lets you easily transfer tracks without any computer required.

mishare_2

The $99 miShare snaps between two iPods and will copy tracks with the press of a button. A single button press copies the last song or video played or a pre-selected photo folder. A longer press duplicates any files you’ve got stored in your current On-The-Go playlist, so you can easily copy multiple files.

mishare_detail The device is perfect for moving non-DRMed tracks between the players, but can also copy iTunes DRM tracks with the caveat that you’ll need to authorize the device using iTunes once they’re copied.

Unfortunately, the miShare doesn’t currently work with the iPhone or iPod Touch, but should work fine with all other iPods with the standard 30-pin dock connector (Mini, Nano, 3G, 4G, Video (5G), and Classic (6G) models).

rock band on your ipod, sorta.

Now you’ll notice that I didn’t say you could PLAY Rock Band on your iPod. But if you’re willing to shell out some serious dough, you can now pick up the entire library of tracks from the hit game over in the Apple iTunes store.

rock_band_itunes

There are currently 74 tracks available in the collection, and at 99 cents each, you’re looking at a whopping $73.26 to pick up the entire set. It’s the perfect way to memorize all the tunes while you’re riding the bus to work so you can defeat your online foes in a blaze of glory over the weekend.

Keep in mind that the iTunes track list isn’t an exact match for the game. For instance, tracks which are cover versions in the game are done by the original artist on iTunes (too bad they’re not that way in the game). There are a handful of other disparities too, but not enough to take away from the sheer awesomeness of the one-stop-shop library.

If you happen to have iTunes installed, you can check out the entire collection here.

iphone + piano = iano

I don’t know what’s in the water this week, but I seem to have a serious music theme going on here. Do you like to play piano? Got an iPhone? Well, if you happen to have jailbroken yours, you can now turn it into a musical instrument.
iphone_piano_iano

iPhone developer Mister Aardvark has just released iAno, a true multi-touch piano simulator for the iPhone.

The simulator offers a complete four-octave keyboard (you jump around the keyboard using the arrows at the top of the screen), with polyphonic sound allowing up to five keys to be played simultaneously. its loaded with real piano samples, making it sound just like the real deal.

Aardvark plans on adding additional features such as a complete 88-key keyboard, switchable sample sets, recording and playback, as well as support for loading .MID tracks and playing them back.

vers 2x ipod/iphone dock: woody goodness

If you don’t already have a compact stereo for your iPod, you might want to check out this beauty. Featuring a natural looking cherry-veneered wooden cabinet, Versaudio’s Vers 2X certainly stands out from the crowd of plastic docking stereos which are a dime a dozen these days.

vers_2x_ipod_dock

The Vers 2X offers room-filling sound thanks to a pair of 3-inch full-range speakers, powered by a 20-watt per channel (peak) class-D amplifier. The dual ported enclosure helps to produce extra bass boom despite the cabinet’s relatively small size ( 11.5″ W x 5.6″ H x 5.6″ L).

vers_2x_ipod_dock_2

The $149 system includes adapters for playing and charging most iPod models including: iPod Video, iPod Nano, iPod mini, iPod, iPod classic, iPod touch and even the iPhone. There’s also a universal dock for other MP3 players. The Vers also includes a slick brushed metal 14-function remote control, which lets you control volume, change tracks, switch playlists and more.

As an added bonus, Versaudio takes an environmentally-friendly approach with their products. The 2X is built using wood farmed from sustainable plantations, assembled using screws instead of glues, and even comes packaged in 100% recycled and recyclable paper.

apple floppy drive reborn as an amplifier [casemod]

Have some old computer gear lying around? Why not do what this guy did, and turn it into something useful once more.

apple_floppy_am

By taking an old Apple 5-1/4″ floppy drive he found at a thrift store, then working some electronics wizardry on the interior, modder Jeff Kobi took this old piece of tech junk and gave it new life as a retro-styled amplifier.

apple_floppy_amp_back

At the heart of the revamped drive is the hacker’s favorite Sonic Impact 5066 T-amp, capable of cranking out amazing clarity and boldness with just 15-watts per channel.

Wanna make your own? Check out Jeff’s step-by-step tutorial over on Instructables.

edible apple logo reminds me of the (fruit) salad days

Check out this tasty realization of the classic Apple rainbow logo, made entirely out of fresh fruit.

apple_logo_rainbow_fruit

Richard Thomas’ clever creation is made from sliced kiwis, bananas, oranges, strawberries, green and red grapes and blueberries.

Ironically, not a single apple found its way into the picture.

iphone lego-touch: millions of bricks in your pocket

lego_iphone_menuWith all the buzz about the new iPhone SDK, all kinds of nifty applications are starting to crawl out of the woodwork. Of all the coming programs, this LEGO construction concept application has to be one of my favorites.

Designed by Nicholas G Panas of play /, LEGO-touch will let you build virtual LEGO creations using a large catalog of basic building blocks. Using the iPhone’s multi-touch display, you can easily grab blocks and assemble them into just about any shape you can imagine. A slick user interface lets you easily zoom in and rotate your designs, and easily apply any color in the spectrum to each of your blocks.

In addition to the basic block construction kit, Nicholas’ concept will let share your designs over the Internet. You can even create your own Mii-like avatar using those familiar LEGO block people. One of my favorite features is the ability to challenge your online friends to a LEGO “build-off”.

While you don’t get the tactile experience of holding real LEGO blocks in your hands, you do get the advantage of being able to carry all your creations in your pocket wherever you go. Plus, you never have to worry about running out of blocks.

play/ is currently working to launch the LEGO-touch concept into software production. Be sure to head on over to their website to check out their high quality Flash-based demonstration.
