Sure, you could drop over a grand on a Philips Ambilight television if you want your TV to set a mood, or you can also turn any television into a giant glowing ambient light for just the cost of a single DVD.

Created by Japan’s Kyouei Design, this minimal DVD contains a rainbow of soothing colors that you can display on your TV screen. It’s perfect for all those times you’re not engrossed in the latest episode of America’s Next Great Biggest 5th Grade Loser, or when you’re completely fed up with the writers’ strike.

The Color Light DVD offers a truly mellow light show, gradually dissolving through its spectrum of colors in about 20 minutes. I’m already chilling out just looking at the pictures, so I can only imagine how sleep-inducing this would be in my darkened living room.

The disc is available from the designboom shop for $19 (plus $7 shipping). [FYI, the disc isn’t region-encoded, so it should play anywhere in the world.]

While there’s still no official word from Nintendo on anything but white Wii-motes, there is now a third-party option for those of you bored with the standard-issue models.

Snakebyte is one of the first companies to offer a third-party substitute for the Wii-mote (called the Riimote), and will be offering them in colors not offered by Nintendo. Functionally, these controllers look pretty much identical to the authentic Wii-motes, although the button designs are a little more modern in styling. The initial models will come in either a gloss black or a dramatic bright purple, which really jumped out at me when I first saw it. They should be available for purchase early in February.

Unfortunately, it looks like Snakebyte hasn’t been able to get their costs down to what Nintendo has since they’re not producing as many, so the price of €39.99 (appx. $59 USD), is a bit hard to stomach. That’s too bad, since they do look really cool.

Drooling over the forthcoming satin silver Playstation 3? Thought you had to live in Japan to enjoy its non-thumbprinty matte finish? Well not if reseller Play-Asia has anything to say about it.

The video game importer is now taking orders for the luscious silver PS3, and the price isn’t much higher than you’d pay for a standard model. The retailer expects to start shipping the new color on March 6th, for $429 USD, a $30 premium over what you’d typically spend for a stock black PS3 here in the states.

Of course, it’s a Japanese PS3, so the default menus are in Japanese (which you should be able to change), and the manual isn’t in English, either. Thankfully, the console does run on standard 110v power, and PS3 games aren’t region-locked, so you should be okay.

It’s been a while since I brought you guys any cool new watches. It’s not for lack of trying, but there just hasn’t been much that’s hit my desk that really caught my eye. So I was pleased when I came across these, the latest analog timepiece from the guys over at Nixon.

The Nixon Murf takes a 1970s-style dial watch, and puts a decidedly modern spin on the design. The watch features rotating hour and minute wheels that rotates behind a fixed-position indicator. In addition the the minimal black and stainless design shown above, the Murf comes in several other color-ways ranging from the sublime to the surreal.

The watches are all powered by a direct drive quartz movement, and feature LED illumination for ease of nighttime viewing. Prices for the Murf range from $300 to $350. Check out the full collection here.
