anti pac-man: you control the ghosts

Here’s an interesting concept, what if Pac-Man’s gameplay were the exact opposite of what you’ve come to expect after all these years. That is to say, what if, instead of Pac-Man being chased by ghosts, you controlled the ghosts and Pac-Man came after you. That’s exactly the idea of this new Flash game called “Anti Pac-Man”.

The concept is simple. Think of it like a squad based version of Pac-Man. Use the keys numbered 1 through 4 to take command of each ghost, then use the arrow keys to guide them away from your yellow dot-gobbling nemesis. As Pac-Man eats up, your score keeps going down, but if you can keep your ghosts alive, you can minimize the damage.

Maybe it’s the annoying loop of the Pac-Man theme that plays over and over again, but I find the whole thing a bit unsettling. You be the judge and check it out for yourself over at Sugar Free Games.

myracer portable console plays flash games

The latest pocket gaming system isn’t from Nintendo or Sony, but from an upstart little Korean outfit called MyRacer. Their new MF101 portable looks like another media player on the surface, but under the hood, it’s a pocket-sized arcade system.

Sure, it’ll play music and video files in a variety of formats, but the MyRacer will also play a number of Adobe Flash-based games such as those from Korea’s Play4U or Com2uS catalog. It’s not clear to me if it’ll play just any Flash file, or just Flash Lite applications.

Clearly designed with gaming in mind, the system has a pair of directional controls, as well as shoulder buttons. It’s got a cool Flash-based user interface, providing quick access to your media and games. The system has a 320×240 resolution 2.4-inch color LCD screen, and comes with 1GB of on-board memory (expandable via an SD slot).

If you want to get your hands on one of these compact players, you’ll have to see if you can get one exported from a Korean retailer such as GSestore or Knox for 99,000 KRW (appx. $104 USD).

wii-mote gets the usb flash drive treatment

If you’re like me, you’re a big fan of Nintendo’s groundbreaking Wii-mote controller design. Now you can carry your files on a tiny Wii-mote inspired USB storage device.

wedisk_usb_drive

Created by SolarMemo, the petite Wedisk flash drive looks like a wee Wii-mote, but press the “A” button, and the USB connector pops out of the top of the controller for you to plug into your computer.

The Wedisk is available in capacities from 1GB to 8GB, but is currently only available in custom production runs (especially if you happen to work for Nintendo). So if you’ve got a bunch of Wii-having friends, take up a collection and order up a couple thousand of these puppies.

usb flash memory offers fuzzy, buggy storage

USB memory sticks are a dime a dozen these days, so you’ve really got to stand out from the crowd if you want to get noticed. These soft, fuzzy critters will definitely latch on to your digital memories in a way you won’t soon forget.

maggie_usb_worm

Designed by artist Nifer Fahrion of NifNaks, these invertebrate USB drives are handmade using wool felting techniques. Her creations include such charming characters as Maggie the Maggot and Gizzy the Data Worm.

According to Fahrion, “Maggie is smart as a whip, and can recite pages and pages of poetry… Maggie is very calm and patient and loves to solve problems. She strives to fill her life with the new and fresh in her life, and this reflects in her eating habits too. Maggie can be found dining at all the new trendy restaurants every night, and has even been occasionally accused of being a food snob. She makes a loyal and loving friend to anyone who will have her.”

On the other hand, “Gizzy will astound you with his ability to remember things – 4 gigabytes worth, in fact! He loves super tart gumballs, and won’t eat anything orange. He enjoys bungee jumping, but most days he’s content just to sit around and read a book. Gizzy is of course an amazing speller and will knock your socks of in Scrabble.” Being one to frequently assign personalities to the inanimate objects around me, I can certainly relate.

Each data worm stores 4GB, and prices range from $66 to $68 each. Since each NifNaks creature is handmade, expect to wait about 10 days to get your hands on one.

usb memory bomb: weapon of mass storage

usb_memory_bombWhile it might not be the most convenient USB drive to carry around in your pocket, this bomb-shaped memory device is sure to draw stares sitting on your desk.

Designed by Mexico City industrial designer Joel Escalona, the USB bomb should keep your data safe, since its design is likely to deter to anybody who might have thoughts of stealing it, lest they might get blown to smithereens. The device looks like one of those bombs that Wile E. Coyote might have purchased from the ACME catalog, or maybe from those old Spy vs. Spy cartoons in MAD magazine.

As an added bonus, it’s big enough to house either a ton of flash memory or a hard drive, given its oversize design. At this point, it’s still just a prototype, but I’d certainly buy one.
